Modern massage is “the manipulation of the soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments, fascia and skin) and joints of the body to gain a therapeutic response, aid in the healing process, and promote relaxation and well-being.”
Massage techniques have been written about and practiced for thousands of years. Writings of massage have been discovered in many ancient civilizations, including Rome, Greece, India, Japan, and China, and were the basis for today’s modern practices.
Chiropractic care and massage therapy work hand in hand to enhance emotional well-being and proper, natural physical functionality. Our in-house massage therapists complement your chiropractic care to improve blood flow, relax soft tissue, and reduce swelling.
The Massage Therapy Experience at East Bay
A trained, licensed Massage Therapist performs massage therapy. Our massage therapists are professional, courteous, and respectful of your dignity and confidentiality. At your first appointment, they will ask preliminary questions to determine your overall health and your health and wellness goals. Your therapist will consider information about your physical condition, medical history, lifestyle, stress levels, medications, and physical pain that could affect your therapy outcome to structure sessions to achieve your health and wellness goals.
Before Your Massage
Before your massage, you’ll be asked to remove clothing to your level of comfort. The massage therapist will leave the room while you undress. Lie on the massage table, underneath the provided sheet or towel.
For your comfort, the massage table is padded and has attachments or cushions, such as a face cradle. If you find music distracting, tell your massage therapist. The same goes for talking during your session. You will be asked about pressure and comfort throughout your appointment. Tell your therapist if you’re uncomfortable at any time.
During Your Massage
During the massage, remember to breathe normally. Sessions generally last between 30 and 90 minutes.
After Your Massage
After your massage, the massage therapist will leave the room to allow you to get up and get dressed in privacy. The benefits of massage therapy are cumulative, so work with your massage therapist to customize a plan to meet your health and wellness goals.
Benefits of Massage Therapy
Massage therapy helps relieve nerve pressure, pain, inflammation, and swelling, and like chiropractic, increases mobility and range of motion. This therapy can also help strengthen muscles, allowing them to function more effectively while becoming more resilient and resistant to injury.
Benefits of Combining Chiropractic Care and Massage Therapy
Together, massage and holistic chiropractic care enhance overall well-being and proper, natural physical functionality.
- Makes chiropractic treatment more effective by relaxing the muscles and nervous system.
- Helps to maintain alignment for more extended periods.
- Pain alleviation by releasing tension within muscles or other connective tissues.
- Decreased inflammation and swelling.
- Optimal athletic performance with improved circulation and blood flow.
- Stress reduction.
Overall, massage therapy is an excellent way of alleviating bodily pain while a chiropractor targets the source of the pain. Combining massage therapy with other chiropractic treatments, including Graston soft tissue manipulation, has proven to be effective and worthwhile for treating many painful conditions. Our patients have reported that receiving both treatments on the same day has proven beneficial.
Conditions We Treat with Massage Therapy
Back Pain and Neck Pain
Massage can help improve the blood flow around the spine. Once a chiropractic adjustment is made, a massage will speed up healing and reduce discomfort.Headaches
A significant cause of headaches is tightened muscles in the neck and upper spine. A massage will loosen those muscles and provide adequate blood flow, relieving discomfort after an adjustment.Joint Pain
After a chiropractic adjustment, to provide proper joint position and support, a massage will reduce the swelling in the surrounding muscle tissue, improve the affected limb’s blood flow, and provide significant pain relief during the healing process. Massage can also help prevent substantial injuries from happening.
