What Is a Chiropractor?
A chiropractor is “a licensed healthcare professional who treats disorders (such as back and neck pain) chiefly of the musculoskeletal system especially through the manual adjustment or manipulation of the spinal vertebrae to correct nervous system dysfunction.” The musculoskeletal system includes muscles, ligaments, bones, and joints.

Manual Adjustment
Spinal manipulation, also called an adjustment, manual therapy, or spinal mobilization, relieves pressure on joints, reduces inflammation, and improves nerve function. When performed by a licensed chiropractor, the technique is safe for most people.
Often referred to as “cracking” your back, spinal manipulation is the application of controlled, sudden force to a specific joint resulting in a cracking or popping sound similar to the sound made when you crack your knuckles.
Dr. Marmorale prefers to employ spinal mobilization, which uses gentler, less forceful thrusting motions and incorporates more stretching.
Some people should avoid spinal manipulation and mobilization – people who have severe osteoporosis, high stroke risk, spinal cancer, or an unstable spine. People who experience numbness, tingling, or loss of strength in an arm or leg should also avoid these treatments. As such, Dr. Marmorale will evaluate your specific needs and create a plan appropriate for you.
Atlas Adjustment
The Atlas is the top cervical bone in the neck. The Atlas adjustment is an effective and gentle chiropractic technique that adjusts the Atlas to align the spinal column allowing your nervous system to function optimally and your body to heal itself naturally.

Graston Technique® Therapy
As one of Long Island’s only certified Graston Technique® Specialists (GTS), Dr. Marmorale specializes in this highly effective therapy. Graston Technique® therapy uses specific, uniquely designed, stainless-steel tools proven to safely and effectively treat chronic, acute, or post-surgical soft tissue conditions. After identifying the affected tissue, a cross-fiber massage technique is performed.
The primary benefit of Graston Technique® therapy is faster recovery. This translates to:
- Less time spent in pain and treatment
- Less reliance on pain medication
- Reduced risk of invasive surgical procedures
While each situation is different concerning condition and its severity, two treatments per week are typically applied during a four- to five-week period. Positive results are often reported after just three to four treatments.

Kinesiology Techniques
While Dr. Marmorale is a licensed chiropractor and will incorporate spinal manipulation if deemed necessary, he prefers to use a gentler approach, often incorporating kinesiology techniques. Kinesiology is similar to chiropractic, except it does not use thrusting force. The technique incorporates:
- A very gentle manipulation via the use of various reflex points
- Nutritional changes
- Emotional stress release techniques combined with the body’s breathing reflex
These techniques do not force bones into place. Kinesiology techniques correct the muscle tension that holds the bones in place and helps them move back and forth. Most of the time, bones are not actually out of place – they are not sitting correctly in place and interfere with the nerve and proprioceptive messages to the muscles and organs.
Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger point therapy works to relieve chronic, muscular pain without oral pain medication. This clinically proven method of treatment is suitable for any part of the body, particularly the upper and lower back, neck, and head. Some common conditions that are improved with trigger point therapy are:
- Shoulder Pain
- Tennis Elbow/Golfer’s Elbow
- Low Back Pain
- Sciatica
- Knee Pain
- Ankle Pain
- Headaches
Trigger points (myofascial pain) are commonly referred to as “knots” within a muscle. They cause tenderness of the muscle that may limit the range of motion of the affected area and possibly cause referred pain that is felt in a distant location when the trigger point is touched, such as a headache. The pain from these points may come and go spontaneously or linger for months.
Knots can be caused by:
- Accidents
- Misuse
- Overuse
- Misalignments
- Disc Problems
- Other Spinal Issues
The goal of trigger point therapy is to loosen knots. As soon as the knots are relieved, there is often an immediate, significant reduction in pain, soreness, and discomfort, leading to long-term relief. Treatment only takes a few sessions, depending upon severity.
