The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that an estimated 50 million Americans live with chronic pain. Another nearly 20 million have chronic pain severe enough to limit their life or work activities on most days or every day. According to experts, chronic pain causes 80 billion dollars in lost wages every year.
There may have been an initial injury or an ongoing cause of the pain, but some people suffer without apparent, clear reason. A person may have several chronic pain conditions, including fibromyalgia, arthritis, and other lingering issues from trauma or injuries.
What is Chronic Pain?
Acute pain is a sensation that warns you of possible injury and the need to take care of yourself. Chronic pain is different. Chronic pain persists. Chronic pain is exhausting. Chronic pain seems like it may have no end. Pain signals keep firing for weeks, months, or even years.
Chronic pain and its causes are complicated and often challenging to treat. Misdiagnosis is common, and frequently treatment involving strong analgesics or narcotic medications can have lasting effects that affect your quality of life.
Do I Have Chronic Pain?
If you have ongoing pain and lasts longer than six months, that pain is considered chronic as it continues long after the injury or illness that caused it has healed or gone away. Often, home treatment such as rest and NSAIDs or other analgesics fail to mitigate it.
If you suffer from chronic pain, call the caring professionals at East Bay Chiropractic Wellness P.C. today at (516) 679-2225 to schedule an appointment.

What Is Fibromyalgia?
The Mayo Clinic states that fibromyalgia is a condition that starts after a triggering event, like surgery, infection, physical trauma, etc. Then the symptoms increase and continue over time even without a triggering event. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia impacts how your brain and spinal cord process signals, turning those that shouldn’t be painful into pain signals and increasing the level of pain in those pain signals.

- Sleep problems
- Stiffness
- Swelling and tingling feelings in the extremities
There are a few conditions that often accompany fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia does not cause these conditions, but people with fibromyalgia often develop them:
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Headaches and migraines
- Interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome
- Anxiety
- Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ)
- Depression
- Postural tachycardia syndrome
How Can the Graston Technique® Treat Chronic Pain and Fibromyalgia?
Those suffering from chronic pain and fibromyalgia often have adhesions or restrictions in their tissue or scar tissue, all of which can increase tension and contribute to pain. Those trained in the Graston Technique® use special stainless steel instruments to “comb” fibrotic tissue and break up the scar tissue and adhesions for better healing.
