What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the practice of inserting fine needles through the skin at specific points to cure disease or relieve pain. According to traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is a technique for balancing the flow of energy or life force believed to flow through pathways, also referred to as meridians, in your body. This force is known as chi or qi (chee). Acupuncture practitioners believe that your energy flow will re-balance when needles are inserted into specific points along these meridians.
Many Western practitioners consider acupuncture points as places to stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue, which boosts your body’s natural painkillers.

Brief History of Acupuncture
Believed to have originated in China, the first definitive reference to acupuncture is The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine, dating from about 100 BCE. However, the exact origin of acupuncture may date back even further.
About the Acupuncture Process
A trained, licensed acupuncture practitioner performs acupuncture treatments. At your first appointment, your acupuncturist will talk to you to find out what issues you are concerned about to create an individualized treatment plan.
The needles used in acupuncture have a minuscule diameter average of 0.00325 inches, roughly the diameter of a human hair, and vary in length from .5 inches to 1.5 inches. They are usually stainless steel, so they do not rust and are very difficult to break.
Acupuncture needles are not painful. Many patients say that they do not feel them at all once they are placed. However, some patients report a tingling or a deep ache around the needle during the treatment. Some people feel a sense of relaxation while the needles are inserted. If any pain is experienced, it’s usually mild because the needle was likely inserted incorrectly and required a quick adjustment from your practitioner.
Your nervous system signals the brain to release pain-relieving, healing chemicals to your brain, spinal cord, and muscles when the needles enter your body. In this sense, acupuncture encourages a healthy flow of energy and communication through your body’s central nervous system resulting in better management of your pain and ailments.

Benefits of Combining Chiropractic Care and Acupuncture
Chiropractic care and acupuncture complement each other. Both work to heal the body naturally from the inside without the use of potentially harmful drugs.
Chiropractic uses manual adjustments to the spine to correct subluxations based within the nervous system that sends messages throughout the body to promote healing. Subluxations are spinal vertebrae that are out of position in comparison to the other vertebrae.
On the other hand, acupuncture removes blockages that may interfere with the body’s internal balance.
When appropriately combined, chiropractic and acupuncture can:
- Increase your body’s natural ability to heal itself
- Correct imbalances
- Boost energy
- Increase your range of motion
- Restore better function of your body.
Chiropractic is enhanced when used in conjunction with acupuncture because your vertebrae are more likely to stay in alignment when your body is relaxed. Tight or spasmodic muscles are more likely to push your bones back into your body’s accustomed misaligned configuration.
