What to Do After a Car Accident
There are several things you should always do after an accident. Once you’re safely off the road and have dealt with the accident’s immediate aftermath, take these three steps:
- Go to the hospital. We advise you to visit the nearest emergency department to be evaluated for injuries, no matter how minor the accident. Broken bones and internal injuries may not always be obvious, especially if you are shaken up or in shock. These require urgent medical attention and may necessitate surgery or other treatments that a chiropractor cannot perform. When you have been cleared by the hospital, we can work with you to facilitate your healing process and ease any pain you may experience.
- File the necessary claims and reports. In New York State, accident reports must be filed within 10 days; disability and no-fault claims need to be filed within 30 days, and other types of claims have variable deadlines. It’s crucial that you notify your insurance company as soon as possible, even if you feel fine after an accident. Some injuries aren’t noticeable immediately after an accident, so you need to be prepared for the possibility of needing treatment days or weeks later. Dotting your i’s and crossing your t’s can make the difference between a claim that’s covered and one that isn’t.
- Start follow-up treatment with us. Dr. Marmorale will perform an examination, evaluate your injuries, and create a plan to address your pain and recovery.
Common Car Accident Injuries
Car accidents can cause a full spectrum of trauma to the body. An accident may leave lingering effects like pain, inflammation, stiffness, or decreased mobility. Luckily, chiropractic care can address many of these, relieving pain, aiding healing, reducing scar tissue, and maximizing range of motion.
Common car accident injuries that may be helped by chiropractic treatment are:

- Whiplash
- Concussions
- Neck injuries
- Shoulder injuries

- Spinal misalignment
- Back Injuries
- Herniated disks
- Joint injuries
- Muscle and ligament injuries
What Is Whiplash?
Whiplash is the most common injury sustained in automobile accidents. It results from the neck and head snapping forward and backward in rapid succession, much like the cracking of a whip.
Whiplash typically occurs during a rear-end collision, but it can happen in any accident or activity where the head and neck receive a sudden back-and-forth jolt.
Whiplash symptoms may include:
- Neck pain
- Neck stiffness
- Shoulder pain
- Numbness in arms or hands
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Blurred vision
- Ringing in the ears
- Concentration issues
- Irritability
- Fatigue
Chiropractic care for whiplash can be very effective in reducing these symptoms and helping your body heal. Whiplash treatment depends upon the precise location and extent of the injury, but generally consists of manual adjustments and complementary therapies. The instrument-assisted Graston Technique® may also be helpful in addressing soft-tissue injuries resulting from whiplash.
Chiropractic Care After a Car Accident
When you book your first post-accident appointment, Dr. Marmorale will perform a thorough examination. He will ask you to perform basic movements to test your range of motion, your reflexes, and musculoskeletal alignment. He will check for tenderness, weakness, and pain in your neck, shoulders, back, and limbs. He may request X-ray scans to look for bone or soft tissue injuries.
After gathering this information, the next step is to create a plan to address your symptoms and their underlying causes. Because every patient is different, we avoid one-size-fits-all protocols. Instead, we provide individualized care, custom-tailored to your specific needs.
East Bay Chiropractic Wellness offers multiple modalities of chiropractic care, all of which aim to address the root causes of your pain without the use of drugs or surgery. Our staff is committed to helping reduce or eliminate your pain and restore overall function after a car accident.
Treatment for your injuries may include one or more of the following:
- Manual adjustment is when your chiropractor applies controlled, sudden force to a joint. Adjustments relieve pressure on joints, reduce inflammation, and improve nerve function.
- Spinal mobilization is a less forceful form of adjustment, incorporating more stretching and less sudden pressure.
- Atlas adjustment is a technique used to adjust the atlas bone at the top cervical bone in the neck. It aligns the spine, allowing the nerves to function properly.
- The Graston Technique® is a tool-assisted method of identifying and correcting soft-tissue damage. Dr. Marmorale is a certified Graston Technique® Specialist.
- Kinesiology adjusts the body through reflex and breathing work, as well as nutrition.
- Trigger point therapy works out “knots” in muscles that limit range of motion and refer pain to other areas of the body.
- Acupuncture is the insertion of fine needles at specific points on the body. This stimulates nerves, muscles, and connective tissues.
- Massage therapy is typically done in tandem with other treatments. Massage can reduce inflammation, improve blood flow, and reduce pain by relaxing tight muscles.
