Scar tissue is part of the body’s natural healing process. When injured, our bodies repair the damaged tissue, sometimes leaving behind scars. This tissue is a collection of collagen cells that form as you heal. Scarring can result from accident, injury, surgery, or other conditions. With some injuries, the development of scar tissue can restrict mobility, flexibility, or range of motion, and this can be painful and problematic if left untreated.
How Do You Alleviate Internal Scar Tissue Pain?
Chiropractic care can help alleviate scar tissue pain by using the Graston Technique®. The method was initially developed by an athlete who was frustrated by his lack of progress following conventional therapy. He used his knowledge and skills to develop instruments to treat his injury. Having found success, he collaborated with Ball Memorial Hospital and Ball State University researchers to fully develop the tools and methods that would become the Graston Technique®.
According to Healthline, the Graston Technique® “helps improve your range of motion with the use of stainless-steel instruments that work to break up the scar tissue that’s causing trouble. The Graston Technique® works best in cases where painful scar tissue is interfering with joint mobility.”
Does the Graston Technique® Break Up Scar Tissue?
A therapist can break down scar tissue and, in some cases, restore full range of motion and reduce or eliminate pain. The Graston Technique® does break up scar tissue; however, that is not as scary as it may sound. Using a gentle scraping motion, chiropractors use tools to softly break down the collagen left behind during the healing process. The soft tissue then becomes pliable, restoring movement and flexibility over time.
Developers of the therapy say that the “unique technique and instruments enable the treatment of scar tissue and fascial restrictions during rehabilitation that allows for faster rehabilitation and with greater success when the goal is restoring range of motion, eliminating pain, and restoring normal function.” This exceptional therapy treats a variety of chronic, acute, or post-surgical soft tissue conditions.
Is the Graston Technique® Painful?
Patients report some minor discomfort during the process; however, the treatment is not painful. What is unfortunate is continuing to live with conditions that Graston could improve. The technique helps with:
- Ankle injuries
- Wrist pain
- Neck, shoulder, and back pain
- Knee pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Hip pain
- Injuries to the hamstring
- Chronic/repetitive movement injury such as tennis elbow
