Whether you’re suffering from temporary back pain here and there or dealing with chronic back pain that just doesn’t give you a break, you’ve mulled over the various options you’ve heard of how to manage the pain. Perhaps you’ve tried taking ibuprofen when the pain gets distracting, stretches and other exercises at home, getting a chair for your desk that helps properly support your back, and more.
In too many instances, home remedies just aren’t enough, and you’ll need to work with a professional. That said, you may be conflicted on exactly what kind of professional you should seek out. People will often suggest either chiropractic care or massage. For those of us who may not be familiar with the ins and outs of either practice, what exactly is the difference between the two?
What’s the Difference Between Chiropractic Care and Massage?
While there are differences between chiropractic care and massage therapy, there is also a good deal of overlap that is important to keep in mind. For one, chiropractic care can incorporate some massage and soft tissue manipulation to treat patients. Massage therapy, on the other hand, does not incorporate spinal manipulation into treatments. Massage therapy is primarily done to relax and manipulate soft tissue to treat pain and discomfort.
Is Chiropractic a Type of Massage?
Not exactly. There are many types of massage, and a chiropractor may incorporate massage therapy, such as deep tissue massage, as part of a rigorous treatment plan tailored to your needs. That said, techniques like spinal manipulation do not qualify as massage.
Can Chiropractors Help with Knots?
A chiropractor can absolutely help treat knots in your back. Many of the same therapies involved in treating muscle knots, such as massage therapy, hot and cold therapy, advised stretches and exercise, are all tools in a chiropractor’s repertoire. It’s important to keep in mind that something like knots in your back could be just one of multiple symptoms all tied to the same cause. That main cause needs to be addressed to achieve the comfort in the day-to-day life you desire.
