Graston Technique® for Sciatica Relief

October 13, 2022 by Dr. Martin Marmorale

Sciatica refers to pain that is felt along the path of the sciatic nerve, an area that goes from your lower back through your hips down past your buttocks into your leg. It typically affects one side of your body at a time. It can be the result of a herniated disk or bone spur on the spine that’s caused a compression of the nerve.

The Graston Technique® is a soft-tissue instrument-assisted mobilization, a manual therapy technique applied during chiropractic treatment. Instead of only using the hands, this technique uses six instruments in combination with a specialized form of massage to create a therapeutic effect.

The six core tools used in the Graston Technique® are made of stainless steel and are a variety of convex and concave shapes. The tools have blunt, rounded edges and are used to scan and detect areas of injured fibrotic tissue.

What Is IASTM?

September 29, 2022 by Dr. Martin Marmorale

As we get older, we become more prone to complicated injuries. Some of these more complicated but common injuries come in the form of soft tissue injuries.

Your soft tissue is basically everything that wouldn’t be considered a part of your skeleton or your organs. This includes your skin, muscles, nerves, ligaments, tendons, and so forth. The kind of injuries that you’re looking at that affect soft tissue are sprains, strains, and other similar kinds of injuries that can cause pain, discomfort, and limit mobility.

One approach to managing soft tissue injuries is known as soft tissue mobilization. This form of physical therapy incorporates several techniques to treat the affected area, reduce pain, and increase mobility. Some forms of soft tissue mobilization include the use of specially designed tools. These are known as instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization therapy, or IASTM for short.

Studies have shown that soft tissue mobilization can be more effective in pain reduction than even corticosteroid shots. What else do we know about IASTM?

The Relationship Between Migraines and Chiropractic Services

June 22, 2022 by Dr. Martin Marmorale

We’ve discussed the connection between neck and back pain, the causes of said pain, and how chiropractic care can help manage or relieve that pain. However, there are other pain centers in the body that need to be addressed. This time we’ll be going above the neck to discuss a different kind of pain; migraines. More than 35 million Americans suffer from migraines. Furthermore, about 1 out of 5 men and nearly half of women will experience migraine headaches in their lifetime.

Many chiropractors have patients that suffer from migraines. So, what is it about migraine sufferers that leads them to seek out chiropractic care?

This month marks the 63rd annual Correct Posture Month. The goal of Correct Posture Month, as you can imagine, is to promote the importance of proper posture and what we can do to help improve our posture.

Our posture has a big impact on our quality of life as poor posture can lead to chronic back pain over time. In fact, approximately 80% of us suffer from some level of back pain. You can visit Posture Month’s website for a list of facts, a 31-day challenge to improve your posture, how to get your posture checked, and more.

Posture is important for both standing and sitting. Many of us work jobs that require sitting at a desk and may have hobbies requiring sitting in front of a computer as well. You have seen or heard people suggest using an ergonomic chair, sometimes referred to as a gaming chair, to help with posture. But are they worth the investment?

Can Chiropractic Adjustments Help Avoid Back Surgery?

May 12, 2022 by Dr. Martin Marmorale

Back pain is a problem many of us will face. In fact, 80% of adults will experience prolonged lower back pain at some point in their lives.

Many people facing chronic back pain may consider or have a doctor recommend surgery as an option. However, it’s important to keep in mind that back surgery can be riskier than most other surgeries, and even the thought of procedures like spinal fusion is too much for some people to consider. Our backs are close to the core of our central nervous system. So, back surgery runs the risk of causing paralysis or other nerve damage that could leave you in the same amount of pain, if not more.

As a result of back surgery being potentially risky, people look for alternatives to back surgery. Some alternatives include weight loss, exercise, and making sure you’re wearing proper footwear. Could chiropractic adjustments also help you avoid back surgery?
