What Is Rotator Cuff Tendonitis?

March 10, 2022 by Dr. Martin Marmorale

For many of us, as we get older, we’re more prone to aches and pains in colder weather and during sharp changes in barometric pressure. We’re not entirely sure of the reason, but those with chronic pain or arthritis are most susceptible to it. Issues with chronic pain are why you hear of so many New Yorkers becoming snowbirds or retiring down to places like Florida.

How to Avoid Winter Sports Injuries

February 25, 2022 by Dr. Martin Marmorale

It’s winter, and the cold weather is back in full swing. Despite having an unseasonably warm Christmas day, we’re looking at cold weather being the norm for the next couple of months with some smatterings of snow and ice. Many Long Islanders may take this time to go upstate or out of state for a weekend getaway to ski or snowboard or stay local and enjoy some ice skating.

While engaging in these winter sports activities may be fun, they aren’t without risk. Like with all sports, if you aren’t careful, you can suffer from injuries ranging from a mild inconvenience for a few days to chronic pain that can follow you for the rest of your life.

Performing lower back exercises for skiing/snowboarding can help avoid injuries, but it’s not foolproof. So, what exactly are the real risks in participating in winter sports?

Scar tissue is part of the body’s natural healing process. When injured, our bodies repair the damaged tissue, sometimes leaving behind scars. This tissue is a collection of collagen cells that form as you heal. Scarring can result from accident, injury, surgery, or other conditions.   With some injuries, the development of scar tissue can restrict mobility, flexibility, or range of motion, and this can be painful and problematic if left untreated.

January 7, 2022 by Dr. Martin Marmorale
